Victims of forced evictions in Beijing, Shanghai and other areas of China, expressed their grievance on World Habitat Day by attending protests walks and spoke about their experience of forced government evictions and demolitions.
Beijing Tiananmen Square was crowded with people furing the week long Chinese National Day holiday but some came instead to observe World Habitat Day designated by the United Nations for the first Monday in October
Former Beijing Human Rights Atty Ni Yulan, told Voice of America that she and many other people went to Tiananmen Square to stage a protest walk, which was closely monitored by the Police.
The purpose of our walk was to protest the illegal confiscation of and demolition of private property---As ordinary Chinese citizens, all we are asking for is shelter so that we may live a normal, simple and undisturbed life said Ni, who had been forced to vacate her home, during the lead up of Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
