What Congressional Pork & Protectionism Buys

Via China View

The U.S. Senate voted to retain trade protectionism in the latest economic stimulus bill, with a vote of 65-31 the Senate rejected an amendment offered by John McCain, R-AZ which would have stripped the stimulus package of the trade protectionist measure.

Steel companies and unions are pushing Congressional Libs to mandate that public works projects such as roads, bridges and tunnels only use American made products despite any prohibitive cost factor.

In 1982 the UAW circulated a confidential memo realizing that the constant drum beat of protectionism "Buy American Theme" would contribute to anti-Asian racism (at page 169) the AFL/CIO followed their union brethren in opposing free trade and instead focused on blaming other Americans, principally Asians, for the losses of union jobs instead of their own anti-competiveness, wage and benefit inflation, including other market forces which drove consumers to purchase less expensive, more fuel efficient automobiles and other consumer goods from different markets.

In May I wrote here that tired old protectionism policies would isolate the U.S. from the world market place, resulting in reduced economic growth and job losses.

On the 18 December, I wrote here that government spending under the Dem's Leadership has exploded to over $1 Trillion Dollars, while our Chinese friends continue to finance our mushrooming debts.

Do Congressional Lib's really want to drive a protectionist wedge between the USA & China who may cease financing all the latest grandiose spending programs.
