Margaret Truman Dies at 83

Seen here waiting to cast her ballot, Margaret Truman passed away today in Chicago following a brief illness.

The author of 32 books including one of her Mother Bess. In 2005 she authored "The President's House 1800 to Present" and reflected upon her own experiences while in the White House which she called the "Great White Jail...you never feel at home in the White House...we made as much of a home of it as I think possible."

One night on a dare she slept in the Lincoln Bedroom which is believed to be haunted by the ghost Abraham Lincoln whose Son Willie is said to have died in the room on February 20, 1862---President Truman went searching for a Butler, planning to have him wear a top hat and knock on the door in the middle of the night. Unfortunately he could not locate the tall Butler he was seeking that had already left for the evening. Margaret Truman recalls that she never saw any ghosts the night she slept in the room.

Mary Margaret Truman-Daniel, was born February 17, 1924 and graduated from George Washington University in 1946 In 1949 she pursued a career in Music and had performed as a singer in Carnegie Hall.

Following a scathing review by Washington Post Music Critic Paul Hume that wrote about President Truman's daughter saying, "...can not sing very well." Harry Truman sent the reporter a letter which said, "...I have never met you but if I do you'll need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a supporter below."

In 1953 Margaret Truman moved to NYC and worked for NBC and in 1956 she married Clifton Daniel who was an assistant foreign news editor of the N.Y. Times who later went on to be the managing editor from 1964-1969 he passed away on February 22, 2000
