China's Quake Lake Still Rising

Tangijashan Quake Lake in Sichuan Province continues to rise despite the diversion channel which was constructed to drain water out.

More than 250,000 people down stream have been evacuated, the water level reached 742.58 meters above sea level at 8:00 pm Beijing Time today an increase of 1.3 meters in 24 hours. The level is 2.58 meters higher than the drainage channel which was constructed.

During the last 24 hours 189 aftershocks were recorded, the China Earthquake Administration said that the total number reached 11,194 since May 12 a Reporter from Xinhua News said that, "aftershocks could be felt in the lake area, we could feel the dam shaking and saw rocks rolling down the mountains." A 5.0 aftershock struck Sichuan Province at 3:28 pm Beijing time today that lasted for about 10 seconds.

China Authorities have confirmed that 69,136 people have perished as a result of the catastrophic Sichuan Earthquake, 374,061 were injured and 17,686 remain missing. More here from China.org

Relief supplies continue to pour into the area, 950,700 Tents have been received, 4.76 million quilts, 13.96 million garments, 854,900 tons of fuel oil and 1.82 million tons of coal.
