Al Gore Bashes China Barry Obama Smiles

During Al Gore's Endorsement of Barry Obama (but who else was he going to endorse John McCain?) Al Gore went China Bashing saying, "...if you bought poisoned lead filled toys from China or adulterated medicine made in China...you know the elections matters..."

What are the facts? What has Al Gore conveniently failed to mention?

Chinese made toys are overwhelmingly safe and the number of unsafe toys is dwarfed by the total of exports. In 2006 China exported
$7 Billion Dollars worth of Toys to 160 countries of about 300,000 batches of toys for export only 29 were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. More here from Reuters, Aug. 10, 2007

The world still trusts China's products, during the first 8 months of 2007 China's exports grew by 23.3% some of the 29 recalls in the U.S. were because of quality but the majority of them were recalled because of design faults or the differences in safety standards between the U.S. and China. Last year the United States & China signed agreements giving the U.S. a stronger hand in screening Chinese exports. Product safety is a concern shared by the whole world, said Changjiang Li, Minister of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

About $2 Trillion Dollars worth of goods a year are imported into the United States from 800,000 different sources, the U.S. imports food from over 100 countries.

China is committed in providing safe products that it imports to the United States and has always attached great importance to food safety. More here from Xinhua/Sina.com

While China bashing may win Democratic votes it is bad policy for a variety of reasons, we live in a global economy and are dependent on trade with our friends and world wide neighbors. Ten Reasons Why China Matters To You.

China currently invests $1.4 Trillion Dollars in U.S. Securities, should China ever decide that "enough is enough" and to divest it's assets into other markets, consider the impact this would have on the U.S. economy?
