Progress To Drain Swollen Tangjiashan Lake

A swollen "Quake Lake" in one of the worst hit areas has topped China's agenda of relief work. The Tangjiashan Quake Lake formed by landslides, is seen here on Monday, authorities rushed on Tuesday to evacuate people in the path of potential flood waters building up.

The efforts are aimed at getting all 1.3 Million people on the move within 4 hours should Quake Lake banks fully open. Hundred of workers using 40 large pieces of earth moving equipment have been working around the clock attempting to construct a diversion channel.

The Tangjiashan Lake is some 3.2 kilometers away from the seat of Beichuan County, the area worst hit by the Sichuan Earthquake on the May 12 The lake hold some 130 million cubic meters of water, it's water level was 727.02 meters on Tuesday up 1.82 meters from Monday however the water levels are slowing.

At least 50,000 cubic meters of debris have been removed. 158,000 people from 169 communities have been relocated so far should the Quake Lake breaks it's banks. The diversion channel is not expected to be completed until June 05
