Helping the survivors of the Sichuan Earthquake

Giving a Red Envelope is tradition in the Chinese community and may have originated during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) when elderly people would bind stacks of coins with red yarn, these were known as Yasuiqian---literally meaning "pressed money" and were believed to extend hope for longevity by safeguarding the older generations from illness and death.

Giving Hongbao today is tradition during Spring Festival and is a must for important family social events in the Chinese community. Red Envelopes are given in times of tragedy and the only time that the sum given should begin with an odd number.

China has experienced a devastating earthquake which has left up to five million people homeless and in desperate need. The Sichuan earthquake has created severe shortages of some necessities, medicines and machines. List of urgently needed goods in quake hit areas with contact information.

You too can help the survivors of the Sichuan earthquake by making a donation to the Red Cross Society of China which is urgently seeking money to aid in relief efforts.
