Rumors are circulating that former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson will drop out of the race for President by this weekend.
Speculation was that if Thompson failed to get at least 15% of the vote by Republicans on Thursday in Iowa that he would drop out and endorse Senator John McCain. In an on-camera interview last night on FOX News, Fred Thompson denied the rumors and likewise in a letter to supporters, Fred Thompson writes, "Soon Fred will be heading to New Hampshire, ready to bring his consistent conservative message to voters in the Granite State for two weekend debates before loading the bus back up and heading down to South Carolina..."
A "CBS News Poll" in mid-December was showing that Mike Huckabee was leading however in South Carolina with Mitt Romney trailing him by 8 points.
Nationwide the AP was reporting this week that John McCain & Rudy Giuliani were statistically even in first place, with Fred Thompson in last place with 9%
